Meet CeCe McDonald, Annual Dinner at CCSF Mission Campus

CeCe McDonald

We are excited to announce that CeCe McDonald will be the Keynote Speaker and recipient of the Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Award at our Annual Dinner & Gayla on Thursday, August 7th at CCSF Mission Campus.

CeCe McDonald was a political prisoner incarcerated for defending herself against a racist, transphobic assault in July 2010. Due to her willingness to fight, supporters and activists in Minneapolis and across the U.S. built up a solidarity campaign to demand her freedom, and were able to win her a reduced sentence. After serving a 17-month term, she was released in January 2014.

After her release, CeCe quickly became a leading and outspoken fighter in the movements for LGBTQ liberation, prison abolition, and racial justice. She is currently working on a forthcoming documentary with actress Laverne Cox on her case, “Free CeCe”. She was the Grand Marshall of Seattle Pride this year, and has spoken on Democracy Now!, MSNBC, and various other media outlets.

We chose this year’s venue as a small gesture of solidarity with City College of San Francisco and the 90,000 students who depend on it. Many are low-income, queer, people of color, immigrants, seniors, English language learners, disabled, ex-offenders, or military veterans. City College has served our community faithfully for seventy-nine years. We cannot imagine a San Francisco without it and are proud to continue to stand by our college.

Join us on the evening of August 7th as we proudly honor our City College champions:

Congresswoman Jackie Speier
City Attorney Dennis Herrera
City College Trustee Rafael Mandelman
Student Trustee Shanell Williams
